Ilya Kovalchuk is a Devil
Ilya Kovalchuk has had the best summer in his whole career and it had nothing to do with his stats. He has created enough buzz because of all the silly contract issues, so now he can settle in for a disappointing year. Never has there been so much to do about nothing since, well, last summer when all anyone talked about was Danny Heatley. I guess when it is a slow off season, the only exciting thing really is a contract signing. I have never really paid any attention to Ilya Kovalchuk before this summer, not only because he was lost in the shuffle in Atlanta for so long, but because he never struck me as someone exciting. I am not a fan of these super long contracts, but I understand they exist now in order to get around the CBA agreement. I still like the old school method of going 3 or 4 years at a time, and proving your worth. So now everyone in hockey will be watching him perform with a fine tooth comb, to see if in fact he is worth every penny of his controversial contract.
